MarkX Lite helps Nigerian schools grade multiple-choice tests with a phone and see the results online. This policy explains what data the MarkX Lite app and the website at markxlite.com handle, and why. It follows the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
Who is responsible
Each school decides how its students' results are used: the school is the data controller. MarkX Lite stores and shows that data for the school, as its data processor, under a data processing agreement every school accepts. Students and parents with questions about their results should contact their school first.
What the app collects
- Camera: the app photographs answer sheets to read them. Reading happens on the phone. From version 1.1.0, photos stay on the phone.
- Results: for each graded paper, the student number shaded on the sheet, the answers, the score, whether the teacher corrected a reading, and the time.
- Test details: subject, class, term, session, answer key, and the teacher name typed into the app.
- Phone details: a random ID the app creates, the phone model and the app version, so the school can see and remove its phones.
- Accuracy examples: when a teacher corrects how the app read an answer, the app may send that example so we can improve reading accuracy.
The app does not collect students' names, contacts, location, or anything else on the phone.
What the website collects
- From schools that apply: school name, address and size, and the proprietor's name, email and WhatsApp number.
- Payments go through Paystack. We receive the result of a payment, never card or bank details.
- A sign-in cookie for proprietors, and Cloudflare Turnstile on the application form to stop spam.
How it is used
Only to grade tests, keep results, show each school its own results, run school accounts and billing, and keep the service secure. We don't sell data or use it for advertising, and one school never sees another school's data.
Where it is stored
With our service providers: Supabase (database and files), Cloudflare (website), Paystack (payments) and Google Firebase (accuracy examples). Some of them may store data outside Nigeria. Data travels over encrypted connections.
How long we keep it
While the school uses MarkX Lite, and for 12 months after its subscription ends, so a school that renews loses nothing. Then it is deleted. A school can ask for a copy of its data, or for deletion sooner, at any time.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete personal data about you. Students and parents: please ask your school, and we will help it respond. You can also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Children
Students are usually children. Their data reaches us only through their school, and is used only for the school's assessment.
